As an Agricultural Science teacher Dr. Ernest was recognized as a 2007 Lilly Endowment Distinguished Fellow Teacher Grant recipient, the 2010 Indiana Teacher of the Year, and the 2011 Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation Outstanding Agriscience Teacher. Then, as the principal of an urban state takeover/turnaround school, which had received a failing grade for seven consecutive years prior to his arrival, he used his philosophy of using rigor, relevance, and relationships to steward high student achievement to turn the school around. Under his leadership the school broke the cycle of being a failing school. Dr. Ernest believes in facilitating learning in a relevant context to answer the questions from the hand in the back of the room.
