Hundred year-old words still find relevance!!

This collection is a biographical statement expressed in poetry from the heart of a black man, making his mark at the end of the 19th Century. It reveals how cyclic so much of life really is.

Book Excerpt

Much of Sam Johnson's poetry was centered around the idea that Negroes were to be challenged to be the best they could be following the harsh experiences of slavery. For example, "Some Things We Should Not Do" says" ...We should not neglect learning, But think it deeply wrong to lightly prize the "lever" That moves the world along."

About the Author

Dorothy R. McField

Dorothy R. McField, granddaughter, provides a glimpse into the brief life of her grandfather, a multi-talented, self-taught, outspoken believer in the dignity of all men. S.H. Johnson expressed himself through his poetry, which is as relevant today as it was when it was first written at the end of the 19th Century, when he lived and worked in Lawrence, Kansas.
