Book Excerpt

When you see a group of seagulls wheeling and diving into the water there is more than meets the eye. At this time of year there are shrimp in the bays which taste as good to seagulls and specks as they do to people. The trout are feeding on the shrimp from below and in turn moving the shrimp to the surface. When the seagulls get wind of this they swoop in to pick off the shrimp that are at the top of the water and jumping out of it. The shrimp are caught in the middle jumping from the frying pan to the fire. If the angler has caught on and gotten in position this is about the easiest way for the angler to find something for his frying pan. When this is happening it is important to move fast, sometimes working birds will go on a long time but this is usually short lived and over as fast as it begins. Birds can work anywhere, but are usually easier to get to by boat, and I have seen them the most often in open water.
