Dick and Jane play a central role in this dystopian novel. Their original purpose was to teach children to read. Here, their task is to educate adults about the sociopolitical changes taking place around them and the belief system that fosters those changes, namely distain for taxation and embrace of the promise of private-sector efficiency. As they watch the unrelenting take-over of public resources, they fear that they are witnessing the collapse of society.

Grace Budrys did not think she should be making predictions about the future when standing at the podium in a lecture hall. Free of that constraint, she is eager to share her vision of the future in this work of near-fiction. Grace Budrys has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her academic work focuses on the health care system.
