Tradition, Trust, Forgive, Laugh, and Appreciate: five reasons why my Viray family is so close. Any family, regardless of origin, size, and distance from one another, can apply these to also build a safe and loving tradition. It’s not a perfect recipe, and I’m sure there are more traits and ways for families to be close in their own ways. These five happen to be our family staples. It’s like the lumpia and pancit at any Filipino family party. They can be cooked and look different, but everyone is happy to see them on the table, and everyone can rely on them to satisfy what they think their stomach needs. I hope my story will encourage others to reflect deeply on what it takes for their own family to be strong and devoted. Keep demonstrating those values by living by them every day and teaching the younger ones the purposes and reasons for family. Create tradition. Create your version of Friday Dinners. — Rosemarie Fontela

About the Author

Rosemarie Fontela

Friday Dinners is a collection of short stories on how one tradition began and ignited a series of family lessons. Like many immigrant families who moved to the U.S. for a better life, Rosemarie’s grandparents split apart for 14 years before her grandfather could petition the whole family. Her grandfather worked various jobs in the Bay Area’s restaurant industry, while her grandmother protected and raised five children in the Philippines. Both in their home country and in the U.S., Rosemarie’s grandmother cooked three meals a day for her family. These meals were cooked with love and she shared her recipes with many family members. Rosemarie’s mother, Norma, is also known for her delicious home-cooked meals, including some of her grandmother’s favorites. Her husband, Andy, was also fortunate to spend time with her grandmother, who influenced him to cook traditional Filipino dishes that she made. Friday Dinners is a very short summary of how their family beliefs have kept them strong and close for so many years. In a quick read, you will learn the making of Rosemarie’s family tradition.
