So many of these people were successful, but why not her, she thought. What did they know that she didn’t? She had at least as much smarts and experience as many of them, but no one had discovered her yet. She had made just as many sacrifices as they had—working ungodly hours for years for less-than-market wages in the hope that her ship would come in. But her ship, if it had even set sail, was such a long time in coming. These people seemed to captain their own ships. They held the rudder of destiny in their own hands. They had somehow arrived, some of them through hard work, some through sheer luck, she thought. And tonight she was just a bystander on the dock of fortune watching them come and go.
Is it luck, fate, or skill that enables some people to succeed where others work tirelessly without reward? None of Jamie’s friends were smart enough to start their own companies, but some had landed mega-opportunities. She thought about the companies that had taken thousands of employees to unimaginable heights just because they happened to be in the right place at the right time and were given a chance to ride those opportunities to riches. How were they lucky enough to pick the winners and avoid the hundreds of companies that disappeared without so much as a whisper? Certainly, she was just as smart and talented as them, but she had never been able to hitch her wagon to the right star.
Jamie had never been part of one of those success stories. She was beginning to think that she would always be one of those silent figures who operate in the shadow of success—destined to be a critical cog in the machines that power successful executives across the finish line so they can collect the prize. Then, when the trophy is won, she would do it all again.
At that moment, Jamie’s trance was broken by an announcement in the hall.
“Please take your seats, ladies and gentlemen. Please find a table and take your seats. The main event will begin shortly.”
People started to quickly maneuver themselves around the tables, each trying to find a seat that was strategically located near some Great One. It was like a feeding frenzy. The race was on! If any lasting connections were to be made tonight, it was now or never.
