In Creatures of the Mist, the author uses his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, as the setting for his anthology, which tells stories about the experiences of various people who are trying to make their way in the world, and the many different ways in which they try to do it. There is a business executive, a cop, a singer, a teacher, a dope dealer, a football player, a strip dancer, a lawyer, a soldier, a landscaper, and many others. They are many different kinds of people. But all of them have one thing in common. They are just some folks who are trying to make it.
