Book Details

Chambered Nautilus explores the themes of love, family, and the ways we are dishonest with ourselves and others. It is a historical novel that takes place in Key West, Florida in the decades surrounding the turn of the 20th century. Sarah Sawyer, an orphan raised by her aunt, fulfills her dreams of becoming an artist and marrying a handsome husband to generously provide for her. Her good fortune is seemingly consumed along with much of the city by the Great Fire of 1886 and Sarah again fends for herself as she provides for her daughter and the foundling girl who is abandoned in her care.

“Lovers of the charms of modern Key West will find Jane Newhagen’s Chambered Nautilus: A Tale of Old Key West a fascinating read. Newhagen’s carefully researched novel fuses a story about a sympathetic, humanly flawed heroine with rich period detail about the beloved island’s nineteenth century past. Stories that educate as they entertain are treasures. Chambered Nautilus is one.” – Wally Lamb, author of She’s Come Undone and I’ll Take You There

About the Author

Jane Louise Newhagen

Jane Newhagen was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and graduated from Brown University. She has lived up and down the east coast, in Paris, France and now lives and writes in Key West. Her three historical novels, Sand Dollar, Pieces of Eight, and Chambered Nautilus were inspired by the house she once lived in that was brought to Key West from Green Turtle Cay in 1847 and by the people who lived in it and now rest in the city cemetery. Jane received the Richard Heyman Recognition Award from the Anne McKee Artists Fund of the Florida Keys for both Pieces of Eight and Chambered Nautilus. She is the Archivist at the city cemetery.
