About the Author

Alfred M. Mathers

Alfred M. Mathers, known to his family and friends as Mike, was raised in a military family (USMC). He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1962 with a degree in journalism and went to work for Time Inc. in New York, where he worked for Time and Sports Illustrated. In 1977, Mike joined the staff of the Chapel Hill Training-Outreach Project (CHTOP) to assist with training and media development. The organization’s mission was to develop strategies and programs that enhance the lives of children and families. He became the agency’s executive director in 1990. In the 90s, he was a trainer of early childhood teachers and administrators in countries around the world including Belarus, Bosnia, China, Croatia, Republic of Georgia, Mongolia, and Pakistan. He was also a licensed facilitator for the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Mike retired after 41 years with CHTOP in July of 2018. Presently, he lives with his wife, Sandra in the northernmost part of Chapel Hill, NC where they share in the lives of four children and nine grandchildren.
