Book Excerpt

"You are going to make me late for school, mommy," Akeelah said impatiently. She then ran over to the end table and picked up her mommy's car keys. Rattle, rattle, rattle went the keys as Akeelah shook them. "Akeelah, you are driving me bananas," said mommy. "Am I driving you apples and strawberries too?" asked Akeelah. "Yes," mommy answered. "You are also driving me oranges and grapes." Both Akeelah and mommy laughed as they walked to the car.

About the Author

Ruth M. Abramsen

Ruth M. Abramsen worked as a Paralegal in law firms for many years. After leaving the law field, she babysat her two grandchildren for five years. Akeelah's Spider is about her cheerful and talkative granddaughter, Akeelah, who was born with only two fingers on her right hand. This didn't stop Akeelah from doing everything all the kids her age did. Ruth hopes that this book will encourage other children with missing limbs or disabilities, and show them that they can do anything they put their minds to. After living in Hawaii for almost 20 years, Ruth and her husband now live in Virginia. Ruth and her husband are both originally from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
