It’s a job that’s all or nothing where often times nothing can lead to mayhem. Superstitions and competitions created by the smokejumpers’ sheer boredom often times lead to comical mishaps. Scott Whitmire fought wildland fires for 33 years, nine years of which he was a smokejumper at the Redding, California Smokejumper Base. Forced to retire young due to a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 2009, Whitmire is pursuing writing as a second career, and helping to raise his teenage son, Dane, in beautiful San Rafael, California.
