Book Details

A tale of transformation and innovation

A good man’s quest had gone horribly wrong, causing a war weary young nation to struggle to survive.

In 1834 a doctor was searching for a way to cure his family and patients. He accidently created a condition more terrible than the world has ever known. Two warring cultures must now band together to combat this new foe.

Across a mostly untamed America where steamships and horseback are the fastest means of transportation, they knew they must outrun this enemy that was sweeping through the country like a virus.

Creating new weapons and adapting forgotten methods, they needed to prepare for an altogether different kind of war.

For if invention’s mother is necessity, its father must surely be desperation.

Book Excerpt

The dirt roads of Chicago were growing dim as the evening waned, throwing ink-black shadows amongst the brilliant red beams of the sun setting behind the buildings. A shadowed pair of eyes peered out of the darkness of an alley as the sound of Dr. Periwinkle’s footsteps faded away. A tall Indian, the Dakota Sioux Warrior Mato Hota, who’d visited the good doctor just a few hours earlier, stepped out and moved swiftly across to the door of the practice. After a futile tug on the door he tilted his head back and set his gaze on the laboratory window of the second floor. It was quite a simple matter for him to scale the crenulated corner wall and lift himself onto the window sill. It took him but a moment to dig his fingers under the wooden frame and pry up the window. He dropped silently into the gloomy laboratory and peered around.

.....

While his eyes slowly began to adjust to the darkness, an odd squeaking caught his ears as he stared through the gloom at the foreign instrumentation and equipment. Whipping around he discovered nine small wooden cages in a row on a tall counter.
