Book Details

Children teach us patience and offer us a fresh perspective on life. As parents, we unconditionally love our children and would do anything for them. Oh, and we swear we will never lick a napkin and then wipe our child’s face off with it. Oh, but the best laid plans… Still, even with all of our parental wisdom, adults can learn a thing or two from kids. The literal and honest way children look at the world is often refreshing and preferable to the suspicious way adults can see things. With complete innocence, children can cut to the quick and do so in a way that is not condescending or adversarial. From this seed comes Pop Goes the Culture: A Father and Son’s Take on the World. Both father and son have written brief essays on 52 diverse topics. Many are kid-related: Burger King®, Elmo®, Icees®, and school uniforms. Some are not: Autumn, going to church, records, and love. While the father tries to craft droll commentaries replete with esoteric pop culture references, his son presents very literal takes on the same topics. Note that all author royalties from Outskirts Press will be going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Book Excerpt

Dairy Queen Blizzards Father: Delightful. Enjoyable. Rewarding. Refreshing. OK, I’m describing Jamie Farr’s portrayal of the Sheik in Cannonball Run II, but these adjectives also apply to the taste of a DQ Blizzard. Since I usually only get the Oreo variety, my opinion is formed by just this one flavor, so maybe not every flavor is as tasty ... Son: I like Dairy Queen Blizzards, and the only flavors I like are M&M and Oreo. The only one I hated in my whole life was the Cotton Candy Blizzard...

About the Author

Kevin and Lukas Sedelmeier

Kevin Sedelmeier works as a technical writer for a software company but has been writing creatively for as long as he can remember. As much as he likes to write, it can’t compare to how much he likes being a dad. He lives with his wife Elizabeth, sons Lukas and Mason, and their dog Springsteen. Lukas Sedelmeier graduated St. Paul’s Preschool with a major in Circle Time and moved on to John Paul II Academy, where he is now in the second grade. In his spare time, Lukas enjoys going to the mall, watching Nickelodeon®, making short films starring his puppets, and being a big brother.
