Book Details

Of Gods and Heroes is structured on the Monomyth of Joseph Campbell from his work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Asopichos, the protagonist, is the first heroic fictional character in the tradition of Luke Skywalker from Star Wars and Neo from The Matrix to be gay. His character develops, taking on us a whirlwind ride from his simple boyhood on shores of Lake Helikē in central Bœotia to his initiation as a warrior–lover in the Sacred Band and at the side of Epaminondas in his great victory over the Spartans at Leuctra. The story’s denouement is his Awakening as a Master in Two Worlds on the slopes of Mount Parnassos after Epaminondas’ death in the Battle of Mantinæa”

Set in the 4th Century, B.C.E. and based on historical characters and events, Of Gods and Heroes relies primarily on ancient Greek writers, philosophers and historical sources: On Sparta by Plutarch, Description of Greece by Pausanias, The Græcia and Symposion by Xenophon, The Bibliographic Library of Diodoros Siculus and The Enneads of Plotinus.
