Come along on the journey!

Remember the pie-throwing comedian Soupy Sales, or Shirley Owens of The Shirelles and their top-of-the-charts hit “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” or maybe Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Eliot Green and his enduring “Lost Colony,” or perhaps pioneering director Cecil B. DeMille and his 1957 cinema epic “The Ten Commandments.” All have North Carolina roots, explored on the pages of the award-winning 27587 Magazine and now gathered here for the first time for your enjoyment!

About the Author

Philip M. Read

Philip M. Read, born in Durham, N.C., to Duke University alumni, grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey outside the Big Apple, graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s in English language and literature, and attended graduate school at Penn State. From there, he embarked on a 30-plus year career at daily newspapers in New Jersey as an award-winning staff writer, editor, bureau chief, and business editor before relocating to the outskirts of Wake Forest, N.C., in 2013, when he founded 27587 Magazine. His spouse is the former Nancy Rees, a hospice nurse and ordained Episcopal deacon; and he has two grown children, a daughter, Lauren Ann Read Koslow, a fellow Boston University grad and a librarian in Baltimore; a son, Philip M. Read Jr., who has a bachelor’s in fine arts from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and is an award-winning illustrator for the magazine; and a granddaughter, Hayley Felicity Koslow.
