Book Details

Love is like this: Revised and New Poems is about learning to voice the grief that is part of the experience of loving. The author takes a hard look at loss in poems like “Gutting the Doe” and a softer look through poems like “Flowers were everywhere.” Everywhere, there is something beautiful to aspire towards and something heartbreaking to mourn and the challenge of loving is being able to do both and not let it keep us from remembering why we love, even if we are still hurt, even if our grief still haunts us.

About the Author

Nathan Deeter

Nathan Deeter received his MFA in creative writing in 1999 and stopped writing to fall in love and marry his wife, April. When his father died from lung cancer in 2010, he was overwhelmed with grief and discovered that separation from his wife and family and suicide would not ease his grief, so he returned to family and writing, excavating his voice only to find it was not his anymore, but those of whom he loved. In 2016, he was diagnosed with and treated for rectal cancer on the same day he welcomed his foster daughter into he and his wife’s home. In 2017, they adopted her and, with her, he found his current voice.
