Nicole DeHaven Vessells was born in New York, NY. She was first introduced to writing poetry in 1991. She would write daily journal entries about her day-to-day experiences. Nicole began to dig deep inside of herself to find that she had a knack for the art of poetry. She has her favorites. Poets whom she admires, like Sonia Sanchez and Langston Hughes to name a few. Quotes like “Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly” – Langston Hughes; and “I write to keep in contact with our ancestors and to spread truth to people.” – Sonia Sanchez. These great poets have inspired her to cultivate a style of writing all her own. For some years Vessells put the pen down to concentrate on her education. This didn’t last very long, because due to growing subject matter and an undeniable urge to paint a picture thru verse she realized poetry was her calling. To begin writing at a point in her life when she needed mental clarity was very freeing for her. She has a style of writing that is inspirational, sensual and very relatable. Nicole’s quest is to reach the masses with verses and voice as she has done performances at numerous open mics throughout the New York area. Currently she is working on new material, building her brand as an entrepreneur and solidifying relationships with directors and producers as well as other artists to take her poetry to a deeper level of understanding via books, albums and future stage performances.
