The author went on to work 16 years at North Lake Tahoe Fire District retiring in 1997 following complications from an auto versus pedestrian accident the previous May while off duty. During his career, Mr. Ball volunteered with the Smith River, California, Fire Department in Del Norte County, California, and the Calpine Volunteer Fire Department in Sierra County, California. He was a seasonal firefighter with the United States Forest Service with the Quincy Ranger District on the Tahoe National Forest. While at North Lake Tahoe, he successfully passed exams for Engineer and Captain, received a Fire Science Degree from Truckee Meadows College in Reno, and Hazardous Materials Specialist Certification from the California State Fire Marshal. He was a responding member of the Placer County HazMat Team based in Truckee, California, and served as a representative on the Lake Tahoe Hazmat Contingency Planning Committee. He attended the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland where he studied Instructional Methodology, Fire Service Course Design, EMS Management and Chemistry of Hazardous Materials. When the Northern Nevada Fire Rescue Academy was established he was a faculty member for the first class to graduate. Ed Ball is now residing in Dallas, Texas.
