In the transition from the Civil Rights Movement to now something happened along the way to the social responsibility of the Black church to the African American community. A Charge to Keep examines the evolution of the social mission of the Black church to an economic and evangelistic mission. A Charge to Keep further examines the expectations of African American church parishioners based upon accomplishments brought upon by achievements of the Civil Rights Movement.


This study involved an investigation of the Black church in a post-Civil Rights Movement era. The objective of the study was to evaluate outcomes in three key areas of social well-being: (a) education, (b) health, and (c) economics.

Dr. Irvin PeDro Cohen

Dr. Irvin PeDro Cohen is currently the Executive Director of the New Town Success Zone (www.newtownsuccesszone.com) in Jacksonville, FL. He is also a consultant on issues of social economic status, particularly in the areas of urban education, health and economics. He currently serves on the Council for the Social Status of Black Men and Boys in the State of FL, the University of North FL’s Dean’s Council and the Center for Urban Education at the University of North FL.
