RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY

Dan Pence and his brothers grew up running free in the mountains of central Idaho. Dan's life evolved from a ranch hand to a ranger for the U.S. Forest Service who managed the mountains that were his life. Some of his experiences with the horses and mules that went with the job, as well as some of the men who influenced his career of helping to manage the mountains of the west, are captured in the stories included in "Horses, Mules, Men and Mountains". Dan's assignments with the Forest Service included Idaho, Nevada and Montana. Share his exciting experiences, sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad, and sometimes painful, in the following stories.

About the Author

Dan Pence

Dan Pence was raised in the small mountain town of Mackay, Idaho where he worked on various ranches through high school. He worked his way through the College of Forestry at the University of Idaho by fighting forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service and at any other job that would help pay college expenses. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 35 years, including assignments in Idaho, Nevada and Montana. He retired from the Forest Service to do wild land management consulting and run an outfitting business. “Horses, Mules, Men and Mountains” is the first in a series of recent pursuits, with work progressing quickly on the follow-up.
