The Sleeping Giant is the Christian Church

The church is made up of humans like ourselves. Christians forget, lose sight or take Christ for granted. We need to be reminded of the healing power we have through Christ and his Spirit. “Awake Sleeping Giant” does that in relation to the mentally ill and needy. It reveals the healing power of Christ and the Spirit expressed as hope, empowerment, choice, and recovery environment. It also reduces stigma, which leads to a healthier community. The sleeping giant is the Christian Church. The church is made up of humans like ourselves. Christians forget, lose sight or take Christ for granted. We need to be reminded of the healing power we have through Christ and his Spirit. “Awake Sleeping Giant” does that in relation to the mentally ill and needy. It reveals the healing power of Christ and the Spirit expressed as hope, empowerment, choice, and recovery environment. It also reduces stigma, which leads to a healthier community. The author lost his son to suicide because of mental illness in 2001. Since then he has volunteered with NAMI and a peer run organization as a support group facilitator board member and officer.

 

About the Author

Rev. Omar Nelson

Rev. Omar Nelson is a retired Lutheran Pastor. He served parishes in North Dakota and Wisconsin. He also served as Interim pastor for five years at four parishes. Besides Seminary training he has completed four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and studied Family Systems at Luther Theological Seminary. After retirement he volunteered with NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. This led to help found the Wellness Shack, a peer run mental health group in Eau Claire, WI. He has been involved as President, Board member and support facilitator since its founding. It was this work that motivated him to write “Awake, Sleeping Giant.”
