Stable Parallel Looped Systems

This book attempts to propose a unified theory of large-scale structured dynamical systems. Examples of such systems are single-cellular and multi-cellular organisms as well as the human brain. The goal is to understand and construct synthetic systems that mimic features exhibited by these biological systems. While there is a renewed interest in general artificial intelligence because of the recent progress in deep learning, the hope with this book is to expand this exploration to evolutionary systems and other harder problems like synthetic consciousness. The approach taken here is unique because there is a constant emphasis on how to construct every single feature exhibited by these biological systems both naturally i.e., without any human involvement and synthetically, in a laboratory. The strong belief is that if we cannot provide such constructions, there must be certain critical aspects that are not well understood and, hence, the proposals must be necessarily incomplete. This approach has also forced the discussion to be less philosophical. Clearly, the book is only a first attempt at achieving these goals and future work is necessary to address several gaps. Yet, it is preferable that you take this viewpoint, question every claim and potentially suggest alternative ideas as well. Hopefully, in the process, you will get a step closer in your personal journey towards understanding the living world and all its beauty.

About the Author

Muralidhar Ravuri

Muralidhar Ravuri, PhD (MIT) is an engineer who is passionate about modeling and designing structured complex systems and has a keen interest in abstract mathematics, control systems and AI/machine learning. Murali’s interest in math started very early on when he was ranked first in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad in 1988 and represented India in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Later, he started enjoying working with physical systems. He pursued a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at IIT Madras, India where he implemented a control algorithm for a prototype missile launcher entirely in assembly language on a micro-controller. At University of Houston, he received an MS in mechanical engineering in the area of structural optimization. Murali received a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT in the area of uncertain feedback control systems with a minor in mathematics. Murali worked as a postdoctoral associate at MIT, a software engineer at Siebel Systems (now acquired by Oracle), at SQLstream, at PayPal, at Netflix, in Uber self-driving and at Curai. At Netflix, he developed an interest in applied machine learning and implemented several state-of-the-art ML algorithms for recommending movies to users. At Uber ATG, he worked on perception for self-driving cars, where he implemented deep learning algorithms for object detection and tracking. At Curai, he is applying the newer deep learning/AI techniques to healthcare. In parallel, he has been trying to model large-scale structured dynamical systems, especially biological systems. One of his ambitious and passionate goals is to construct a synthetic conscious system using his new theory presented in this book.
