David Malberg was born in September, 1947 in Battle Creek, Michigan. His father was an itinerant preacher and his mother played the accordian and was a church soloist. In the process of time, as David’s siblings were born, the family performed Christian music on the radio (in the mid-fifties). David was eight years old at that time. A year earlier, he became converted.
David graduated from Shortridge High School, a college prep school, in Indianapolis, Indiana in June, 1966. That fall, he enrolled at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Malberg majored in Psychology and Spanish, after having taken four years of French in high school.
The young university student became a member of Metropolitan Methodist church, where he was trained in the choir by a P.H.D. organist and musician. This was when David became interested in organ music and purchased a chord organ. He sang baritone in the choir and took piano and music courses at the university.
Mr. Malberg came to Tampa, Florida in the fall of 1970, where he trained as a song leader for the church, and later became Music Director at Marantha Chapel. He resigned in the summer of 2000, but became the Treasurer at the church.
David received his BA in Spanish in December, 1971; he worked as a banker for twenty years. After a terrible auto accident in 1992, Mr. Malberg began a career in teaching. He earned teaching (graduate) certificates in Spanish, French and ESL at USF from 1994 to 1999. Mr. Malberg taught in Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Tampa, Florida, and Belvedere, Illinois.
Mr. Malberg retired in June, 2004, after an operation left him disabled.
