26. THE ELDER
“Should we catch a tram?” Sarah asked me, looking at a map outside the train station in Bern, Switzerland.
“Nahh, it’s a beautiful day. We’ll find it.” We were looking for Eichholz, the campground where the Aussies were going to be.
Much of the city of Bern is from the medieval time period. The stone streets are narrow and not made for automobiles. We were walking with little direction in the breathtaking atmosphere around us. We stopped in a small park near a fountain to rest. It was mid-afternoon and the air was cool. I kissed her there in the shade and we were happy to be out of Paris.
Along the way we were stopped by a little old man asking for the time. He spoke to me in Spanish and I noticed a pocket watch in his vest pocket. He spoke of life and love and commented on Sarah’s beauty being like the beautiful day. He was very kind and peaceful.
Leaving him, I noticed a certain sparkle in his eyes. It was as if they twinkled with the reminiscent thoughts of younger days. He could have been me from the future, returning to the days he most loved.
