The murder of an innocent tourist in the Bahamas in 1980 begins a story that continues to play itself out in it's effects on the family for years to come. They must face addiction and financial struggle. And later, the pain of watching an innocent child suffer with a disease that no one in the family had ever heard of. Strength was what had to develop in order to survive.

But time and again they were able to overcome the sadness and find their way to laughter and joy and acceptance with the strength that is found in the love of family and friends. Forgetting the Hurt, Remember the Hope was intended as a tribute to a man who died too young to meet his potential and ended up being a tribute to two men who died too young to meet their potential. And also, a tribute to the survivors for finding the joy of life by not succumbing to the devastation.

The story is told from several perspectives. Each person who added to the story had a story of his or her own to tell. Each told that story with his or her own voice. And though the facts are devastating, the overwhelming conclusion is one of hope that results by having endured the worse that can happen and surviving it.

Bill turned the jeep around and backed it up facing the road we would travel back down. To the left was what looked like driftwood and was actually the remnants of a boat, its wood dried and bleached by the sun, its oars intact, its hinges rusted. A campfire had recently been made there and pieces of old, discarded clothing and a rubber flip-flop were half buried in the sand. Footprints were all around the campfire and beached boat area. It never occurred to us that we might have intruded on a hidden location of some wrongdoing or that someone might be watching us as we poked around the area, snapping still photos and taking home movies.

About Sandee Carlisle

Sandee Carlisle lives in a small Georgia town with her present husband, Gary. She was widowed at the age of 37 and faced the daunting task of raising three children without her husband’s love and support, but forever keeping him alive in the memories and hearts of their children, Betsey, Jeff, and Billy, who were nine, ten and twelve at the time. In spite of what took place on that beach in Nassau on November 13, 1980, Sandee has created a life for herself that is full of joy and laughter. Today she finds happiness in her writing and painting, but she really lights up when speaking about her grandchildren who now number ten. Six are from her own children and four more from Gary’s children. All are happy, healthy and productive youngsters.

Death and addiction are things that are shared by others in this world, but joy and happiness have had to replace the sadness. Hers is a story of tragic loss, murder, addiction, but moreover, one of living through these things and finding great strength in the living of life. This book is a tribute to Bill, Jeff ,and Conner. It is the culmination of years of writing and remembering and having to deal with all of the good and bad, happy and sad, that comes with life. And that life goes on. Sandee looks to the future and laughs through the tears when recounting the past.
