He would sit on the beach and watch as Mr Proctor was greeted by Mrs Proctor and their children and dream that he was one of the children." This secluded spot became Nick's secret hideaway. his santuary.
Nick was crying as he was escaping from his daddy. His side was hurting very bad and his face was swollen and bruised from his daddy's fists. He rode his bicycle to his secret hideaway and sat there crying. Suddenly a calm came over him and he knew what he was going to do.---He was going to kill his daddy. He got on his bicycle and rode home. When he arrived, his daddy was asleep in a drunken stupor and his mother was not home. Nick went to the dresser where his daddy kept a pistol. He took the pistol, cocked it and pointed it at his daddy's head. He began squeezing the trigger when suddenly his mother appeared.
"DON'T DO IT, PLEASE STOP, she screamed. Nick stopped squezing the trigger but kept the pistol pointed at his daddy's head. Nick began crying again as he said "I ain't never gonna let him hurt us again." He kept the pistol pointed at his Daddy's head while he was trying to decide what to do. Hos mother put out her hand and said "please, give me the gun." Finally Nick handed her the pistol.
A car pulled out in front of Nick, cutting him off. "Come here", Judge Smithers demanded, "Don't think I don't know about your father and about your reputation as a gang member. And I'm not about to have the likes of you dating my daughter.
'Mail Call!" , the clerk shouted. Nick was handed a letter from Betty and he wondered why she was writing instead of Avis. He began reading: "I have dreaded writing this letter but unfortunately I have to------Nick began crying and slumped to the floor by his bed.
Red was hit in the chest. Nick opened fire, shooting all of his ammunition. In a trancelike state, he jumped up and ran toward the cave entrance and threw two hand grenades. Suddenly it was quite. Nick went to the cave and found that he had killed five Japanese. When the rest of the Platoon got to him, he was sitting, holding Red and crying. Red had died in his arms.
As Nick turned around to answer, he was awestruck. He couldn't believe his eyes when he saw this beautiful blonde standing in front of him. "My name's Nick", he answered and, just as he opened his mouth to say more, the lights went out and Joanne disappeared.
"I don't think you will ever be happy until you go back to Sarasota and show everyone the real you", Joanne said. "I'll be happy anywhere as long as I'm with you, so, it's settled, you're joining Mr. Proctor's law firm and we're moving to Sarasota.
"Can I talk to you for a few minutes" Judge Smithers said to Nick. "Sure", Nick replied. Judge Smithers took Nick by the arm as they walked to the other side of the room. "I want to apologize to you for the way I talked to you and handled the situation concerning Muriel several years ago." "I was wrong about you and I want you to know that I am sorry for misjudging you." "I do hope you understand that I was just trying to protect my daughter." "Don't worry Judge, I don't blame you at all." "I hope you believe me when I tell you that I always treated Muriel with the utmost respect." Then, with a wry grin on his face, Nick said to Judge Smithers, "by the way Judge, do you really think that this one time no good boy might really have a chance of becoming Mayor of Sarasota.
So, in spite of the Alzheimer's, it was evident that Mr. Proctor did know who he was and that he was with him in his final moments.
Finally, he got up and walked slowly to his car. Without even realizing it, he drove along the beach road until he came to the secluded spot that he had gone to so many years ago when he was a troubled little boy. He got out of his car, walked to his secret hideaway, sat down on the sand and, in his mind, began replaying the journey through his world from the time he was a little boy with impossible dreams.

He was a World War II Army Scout during combat in the Philippines and, after World War II, he was an Officer in the U. S. Army Reserve.
