The Reality of the Profession
Being a Doorman/Bouncer can fluctuate from quiet- to easy going- to vigorous -to dangerous. There is no set pattern or degree. A quiet night can become active-aggressive by the arrival of a few rough patrons. It can also go from vigorous to very dangerous by the arrival of aggressive street gang members or violent felons. You are employed in a line of work where bad attitudes, active-aggressive personalities, excessive consumption of alcohol and drug abuse are accepted as the social norm. It is your job to enforce the rules and regulations mandated by ABT, ABC and local Law Enforcement that pertain to your function in the nightclub.
A Doorman/Bouncer must be able to defend him/herself and protect others. Just so you understand, here are a few things that have happened to myself and my fellow professionals while working as a doorman/bouncer. We have been punched, kicked, grabbed, bitten, spat on and hit with bottles, chairs, pool cues and tables. We have had weapons of all types pulled on us, everything from chains, baseball bats, stun guns, pepper spray, knives and firearms. I myself have been shot and cut twice and poisoned once. If you are seriously thinking about becoming a bouncer/doorman, you should know that this profession can bring a heavy toll to one’s life. It certainly isn’t all just good times, women and music. You’ll have to guard yourself from getting jaded and bitter. You will see abuse, violence, drugs, lewd sex acts, alcoholism, and sometimes even death. The nightclub scene is very political in nature; treachery and deceit are always present. It is very much a ‘high school mentality’ where gossip and countless rumors can easily damage one’s personal life and reputation. Make sure you possess a strong mindset and stick to your professional standards at all times when you decide to become a doorman/bouncer or you will fall prey to the temptations and negativity that can impair a professional’s judgment
