Improving the Odds of Getting Beyond the Door offers the all-too real story of the struggle to succeed in today’s world. Based on real events and information shared by business people nationwide, this book provides a composite narrative of a hardworking, ambitious young man named Ken, who enters the mainstream of corporate America and quickly encounters the attitudes, thought processes, conditions and behaviors that build barriers to advancement.

Improving the Odds of Getting Beyond the Door addresses the cause of such barriers, making it the perfect guidebook for learning how to identify, understand, and manage such career-altering variables.

It shows the importance of:

* Being results-oriented and a solution provider

* Developing a reputation for being a sound and timely decision maker

* Having courage to seek and act on career enhancing options

* Adhering to values and beliefs through both good and bad times

* Enhancing one’s communication skills

* Developing managerial courage

* Being worthy of a mentor/sponsor

So I started to spend more time at the office, coming in early and leaving late in hopes that I would be observed as a dedicated and loyal employee. Doing those things initially paid off. Several development and advancement opportunities surfaced that I was in the running for but did not get. Although that frustrated me, I remained positive and determined to stay the course. I started discussing my views with some of my buddies. During one of those discussions Gee, more experienced than I, told me not to get too uptight because “shit happens” and “that’s just the way it is.” He also said, “If you want to see the forest, get your damn nose out of the tree.” Initially, I didn’t put much into Gee’s comments, but I knew he was telling me to be more observant of my behavior and the behavior of others—a good piece of advice, no doubt.

I reemphasized my management aspirations to my boss. I also contacted Maurie, the human resources representative. Maurie gave several tips on how to improve. He also told me that at times it is better to simply get along—don’t rock the boat—and that should be, for now, my strategy. While I felt he wanted me to be patient and stay focused, a passive “follow-the-lead” strategy seemed misguided. Being passive was what I was doing, but I had now grown weary of it. I knew I needed to be more aggressive.
