BEHIND EVERY GREAT ROMANCE IS A STRUGGLING WRITER

Can Life really imitate Art? When sophomore Laurie Preston is chosen to be lead screenwriter for a movie her high school is producing, she sees the chance of a lifetime to scribble a romantic script that will finally make the boy of her dreams say the words she's been longing to hear. Unfortunately, the senior hottie who won her star-struck heart from the very first moment she saw him has yet to discover she even exists.

Movie Girl is the launch title of a new humorous fiction series targeted to teen/tween girls. Inspired by the author's long memory of high school angst and her current work in the film industry as a consultant, Movie Girl is a comedy that transcends the generations and affirms that every "Laurie" will know an "Artie" at least once in her life. Hopefully such infatuations will not last more than a semester.

Dear Diary,
I saw Artie five times today. Twice at his locker, twice on his way to class, and once at the Snack Shack. I almost got to talk to him and ask what he thought of The West Wing last night but stupid Wayne came up just then. Kathy says he and Artie are already talking about college and where to go. Please, please, please let it be someplace close like Tufts. If he moves far away, I’ll totally die.

Laurie Preston issued a deep sigh and re-read her latest entry, signing it as she always did with Artie’s last name instead of her own. Laurie Weisberg. “Why do you sign it at all?” her best friend Kathy always asked. “It’s your own diary.” For that matter, Kathy would always add, why didn’t she just keep everything in a file on her computer like a normal person?

“Hackers,” Laurie always replied, deeming it far safer to hide her daily scribbles from one person—her mother—than to chance the possibility of their discovery by a multitude of cyber millions.

Not that her crush on Arthur Jerome Weisberg was any great secret, of course. From the very first time she saw him, she had known he was It.

“Who was that tall boy I saw you talking to?” her mother, Liz, had inquired the week after the Weisbergs moved into the neighborhood. Laurie was pleased that even though her sandy-haired swain was only twelve and fighting acne at the time, he was obviously someone who stood out favorably in the eyes of adults.

Laurie still remembered her reply, proud and unhesitant. “That’s the boy I’m going to marry.”
