With the untimely passing of his mother and the death of his beloved wife at the age of twenty-six, Hank Duval-Fairhaven's fine cabinetmaker-has a lot on his mind. As he seeks to come to terms with his conflicting emotions, he finds himself growing more and more fond of his wife's best friend, Maggie. Returning his affections, Maggie spurs him on to leave hearth and home to pursue an art career in sunny California. Should he follow her urgings to shape him into an artist and leave his beloved Northwoods? Whatever inner struggles Duval is facing become quickly eclipsed when renovations at the old mill uncover a body that has been buried under the concrete floor for more than a decade.
"'Them construction workers was talking out at the Bayside Tavern last night, and they was saying they saw it, the body that is. Looked like a big bag of bones all wrapped up in a rug, they said.'
"The diner fell into a heavy silence, all eyes focused on Pete Peterson, hanging on his every word, waiting to hear more. For an instant, Hank sensed a vague image reaching up from a grave, and as the fog of the past lifted slightly higher, it revealed a vision of six young boys standing in a circle staring down at the face from his recurring dream."
What Hank might remember could destroy his life but he must remember in order to prove his innocence.
