Few lived to tell about the eerie happenings in a Louisiana Swamp after dark. Those who were able to escape described the horrors they saw as they tried desperately to leave. And so a sign was posted: Warning! Do Not Enter After Sundown.
The supernatural happenings actually took place in a Louisiana swamp some time in the late 1800s. Eerie, scary, almost blood curdling in its impact, the crescendo builds page after page, with the mystery slowly unraveling, only to come to a complete frightening climax, with an ending that is quite unexpected. At the same time, it is a tender and sweet budding romance that comes full bloom in the mysterious swamp.
When Shirley's father, psychic detective, Lloyd Blackwell, heard of the frightful happenings, he was inspired to write about it so it wouldn't be forgotten. She was a teenager when she read his manuscript, and found it to be a most exciting read. When her dad died at age 86 on October 13, 1996, she was thrilled to find his manuscript, and put it into book form so true mystery lovers everywhere could enjoy the story.

“I was out there one night about two years ago. Stacy, our East driver, was on that run. I went with him to Rushville. Stacy wanted to stay over, but I wouldn’t do it, so we started over just after sundown. The sun was just sinking into the last trees when we left the warning sign you noticed over there.

“I’ll never forget that night. It was still in the foggy season of the year, and a haze was lying over the swamp. Stacy and I both rode in the driver’s seat as we came rolling along to the Moaning Sign. We often refer to it as ‘The Moaning Sign’ because of its unsightly appearance

“Stacy pulled alongside the moaning sign and stopped the team. He eyed the swamp with contempt. Spurned with his frightful fear of the swamp, he hesitated a few minutes before he said a word. He spit a chew of tobacco to the ground and grumbled hoarsely in a semi monotone, ‘it’s a nasty mess.’ He mumbled something else to himself and turned to me as if to say – ‘so you wanna go across, huh?’ As for me, I didn’t care to stay, but had I known what we were in for, I would have stayed.

“Stacy pulled the reins up a couple of times, released the brake and shouted to the team. The horses stepped forward, tightened the traces and turned back, looking us over questioning as if to say . . . do you really mean it? ‘Get moving,’ he yelled, and again and again he yielded the brutal whip upon the tired team. ‘Take it easy,’ I begged him. ‘They probably see a stray dog or something.’

By this time, Stacy had the team in a full run. He looked at me and in a growling tone said sorely, ‘they’re not afraid of all the dogs in dogdom . . . there’s something else out there. I don’t see it, but THEY do, or else they feel it.’
