Chapter 1
____ Pain! Sharp, incessant pain throbbed deep inside my skull. I awoke with a start and immediately my eyes squinched shut tightly against the brutal assault of the daylight. As I cautiously cracked open an eyelid, a shaft of sunlight streaking in through the window forced me to slam my eye back shut. What was that annoying rat-a-tat-tat? Squinting this time against the onslaught of unwelcome light, I could just make out a backlit bird-shaped halo outside the window; a woodpecker intent on banging his brains out on the eaves. Stupid bird!
