Commander Harry Dowding works directly for the assistant commissioner of the Essex police and his job requires him to investigate high profile and politically sensitive situations. His boss Hubert Delaney needs Harry's skill in preventing any leaks to reporters from the local and national tabloids. Harry Dowding travels to Mallard Island to resolve the suspicious death of a resident who happened to be a close friend and confidant to Daniel Proctor. Daniels is a major land owner on the island and through his political contact arranges for a special police investigation. With the help of his detective sergeant Eugene Dillon they unearth the truth after sifting through many suspects to unravel the lies and deception that weaved a web of surprising revelations. Detectives Dowding and Dillon also investigate the murder of a young house keeper on the Willowby Grantham estate Willowby is a member of parliament and the estate is on the outskirts of the village of Pebblestone. The investigation leads the the detectives to identical twins, an equestrian challenge and an encounter with a family of Romany Gypsies. the extensive questioning of a motor cycling chapter called the Black Angels reveals a surprising membership and is how Dowding solves the crime.
Peter Webb is a student of the human condition, wielding the written craft to enrapture the mind much like an artist wields a brush.
