When Marci Layne returns home, past and present collide in the flames of a Brewster County landmark. All the evidence points to her guilt as the murderer of her high school lover. Elton Fightmaster, an ardent fan, must establish her innocence with only her word as proof, “I didn’t kill, Bill.” Does the truth lie hidden in a twisted past of secrets or is its presence stalking the streets to destroy Elton and his friends?

My gaze drifts--stops hard. Breath is sucked from my lungs.
I am eight years old and looking into the brilliant green eyes of the new girl Miss Sephenson has told to carry my books so I can use my crutches. Undying love is born on the heady perfume of chalk dust. The same flame-burnished hair glows around the famous face. I have watched her for hours from the dark movie house in Cloverton.
I dream I am Fred Astair and can whisk her away on the clouds of moonlight, dancing from star to star. I can ride up on a great white stallion, bend down and lift her to safety, then canter into the sunset.
She smiles. No one has informed my left leg aluminum will not respond to her magnetic force. I clasp the back of a chair as I begin to fold and fall against a table. She waits for me to get my feet in their proper place, as she had so many times. She never tried to help, just paused until I righted things for myself.
I ignore the eyes of the diners burning a hold in my back and their indulgent smiles. I return her smile with a self-deprecating grin and stumble toward my destiny on trembling legs.
It is an extravagant gesture but when she extends her hand I raise it to my lips. "Will you marry me?"
