The Dietary Laws
....An analysis of the information written in these verses follows
below beginning with Leviticus 11:3, which gives parameters
for distinguishing clean animals from those
considered unclean:
Leviticus 11:3 3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and
cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat. KJV
Animals that chew the cud are classified as ruminants. They are hoofed animals that digest food in two steps. The
first step involves eating the food source, and then regurgitating
a semi-digested form known as the cud. The second
step, a process called ruminating, involves chewing and swallowing the cud. Ruminants are separated into two subcategories -- Ruminantia and Tylopoda. The Ruminantia are split-hoofed or two-toed, identifying them as animals classified as clean and fit for human consumption. The Tylopoda
don’t possess split hooves and, even though they
chew the cud, are classified as unfit for human consumption
according to Leviticus 11:3. Examples of Tylopoda are
camels and llamas.
Ruminants possess four-chambered stomachs. The names
of the chambers are the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and the abomasum. The food is mixed with saliva in the first two chambers (the rumen and reticulum) where it is separated into two distinct layers of solid and liquid matter. The cud consists of a clustered mass of the solids. It is regurgitated,
and then slowly chewed in order to mix it thoroughly with saliva and to break down the size of the particles. Ruminants are herbivores by nature, eating primarily grasses and shrubs. When they consume grasses and shrubs, the cellulose fiber is broken down by the microbes in the rumen and reticulum, and then converted to volatile fatty acids. Proteins and non-structural carbohydrates are fermented as well. The rumen and the reticulum are sometimes called the reticulorumen, since they, for the most part, perform the
same function....
Does Science Support Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14?
The saying that we are what we eat is well supported by the Dietary Laws of the Bible. It can be said that the clean and unclean food guidelines in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 provide the foundation for sound dietary practice. Many researchers have documented clinical data supporting these laws -- some while intentionally seeking to prove the Biblical connection while others did so unintentionally. It is the opinion in some well-informed circles that the sheer number of disease cases caused by violations of the Dietary Laws may only be surpassed by diseases spread by sexual contact, which are capable of being transmitted through one’s own activity or, as some sources believe, genetically.
The word abomination is used in Leviticus 11 to describe how to regard the act of eating unclean creatures as well as the act of touching their carcasses. It is Old Testament word #8263 in Strong’s Concordance, which is the Hebrew word sheqets. It means filth, or figuratively and specifically, an idolatrous object. The word sheqets is derived from the word shaqats, a primitive root, which is Old Testament word #8262 in Strong’s Concordance. Its definitions include to be filthy, i.e. to loathe, pollute, abhor, or detest. The word pollute implies that consuming or touching the carcasses of these unclean creatures will contaminate one’s body. Is there any scientifically verifiable proof that eating unclean food pollutes the human body? Consider the following:
David I. Macht, a medical doctor and pharmacologist, served as assistant professor of pharmacology at Johns Hopkins University from 1912 to 1932 and was the first to be awarded a Doctorate in Hebrew Literature at Yeshiva University in New York. He is credited with pioneering the use of a technique called phytopharmacology, which involved measuring the effects of drugs on plants.
Using this technique, Macht conducted experiments to determine if principles of clean and unclean food found in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 could be scientifically verified. In a 1953 report published in the Bulletin of the History of Medicine (Volume 27, pp. 444-450, The Johns Hopkins Press) entitled An Experimental Pharmacological Appreciation of Leviticus XI and Deuteronomy XIV, Macht showed a statistically significant higher phytotoxic index for unclean meats when compared to clean meats-- i.e., unclean meat proved far more toxic to humans than clean meat -- and the correlation was 100%.
The Lancet -- published weekly by Elsevier (a part of Reed Elsevier), which was founded in 1823 -- is one of the oldest and most respected medical journals in the world. In an article published in the March 23, 1985 issue, Nanji and French reported a strong relationship between pork consumption and cirrhosis of the liver.
Note the following report on seafood safety entitled Massachusetts Aquaculture White Paper -- Seafood Safety/Public Health (www.mass.gov). Though the report falls short of recommending outright that shellfish consumption should be avoided, the numerous scientific details provided do suggest that its complete elimination from the diet would be a wise course of action. Take note also of the effort governing agencies employ to protect the citizenry from shellfish poisoning:
"Public health issues surrounding the quality and safety of wild and cultured shellfish have been a source of general concern throughout the industry. Much negative information and publicity, especially concerning water pollution and contaminated shellfish areas, has increased public awareness about the potential dangers of eating shellfish, particularly shellfish that has not been adequately stored or cooked. As discussed earlier, bivalve mollusks are filter feeders, straining particulate food from surrounding water (and absorbing elements through substrate). The particulates are caught on the gill surfaces and are transported to the digestive tract. Because of their ability to filter significant quantities of water in relation to their size and the ability to retain microorganisms in the size range of bacteria and viruses, shellfish may ingest and concentrate undesirable pathogens, as well as toxic pollutants and heavy metals, during the filtering process. Some bivalves are so efficient that they may concentrate and/or exceed 1000 times the ambient contaminant concentration. (Chang, 1991) Many of these pathogens may have little effect upon the shellfish, but could be devastating to a consumer"....
Why Animal Blood Should Not Be Consumed
....Notice Deuteronomy 12:23 states that the blood is the life, i.e., the life is in the blood. The word life in this verse is Old Testament word #5315 in Brown Driver & Briggs Hebrew Lexicon, which means a soul, self, life, a creature, a person, an appetite, a mind, a living being, a desire, an emotion, a passion.
In analyzing possible reasons behind the law prohibiting blood consumption, we see one danger -- based on the definition above -- would be contamination of the body by disease-causing parasites (living beings) carried in the blood of animals. Another reason would be acquisition to some degree of the characteristic mind, desires, emotions, and passions of the lifeform the blood came from. If this concept sounds far-fetched, consider that DNA is carried in the blood of animals. DNA molecules contain the genetic instructions used in the development and function of all living organisms. Genes are the DNA segments that carry genetic information. By interacting with each other, genes influence physical development and behavior.
Examples have been noted in the sports world of beef blood consumption for the purpose of inducing aggressive behavior. Sugar Ray Robinson, a boxing champion who held several titles in the 1940s and 1950s, professed to drinking beef blood for what he termed, vitamin fortification, in a June 13, 1960 Time Magazine article. When asked how he managed to maintain his competitive edge at the age of 40, Robinson replied that he drank three cups of beef blood per day when preparing for a fight, which he felt would help him to continue fighting for another five years. He is said to have adopted the habit on the advice of Chappie Blackburn, trainer of former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, which suggests the likelyhood that many others in the profession were doing it as well. One of his trainers commented in a television documentary that he always knew when Robinson had been drinking beef blood because his disposition would become noticeably mean-spirited and aggressive....
Sperm Warfare and Cervical Cancer
....The sperm army consists of an interesting cast of characters, with far more diversity of function than one may expect. The most common soldier in this army is the sleek, athletic, cell that consists of a head, a mid-piece, and a long, slender tail. The flattened head is paddle-shaped, oval in outline, and appears to be wearing a cap, which is filled with important fluids. It carries a densely folded package of DNA, the genes that a fertile sperm is programmed to deliver to the heart of the egg. The head sits atop the short, stiff, mid-piece, which is the sperm’s powerplant -- the place where stored energy is used to activate the tail for swimming. These sleek soldiers navigate effortlessly through the female’s body fluids. They comprise about 60% of the total in a normal ejaculate.
The remaining 40% can be described as follows: Some have large heads, while others have small ones. Others, called pinheads, have heads too small to carry the genetic package of DNA. Some have round heads, while others have cigar-shaped heads. There are some with pear-shaped ones and others with heads shaped like dumbbells. Some have heads so irregular that they defy description. The ones Baker calls monster troops, have two, three, and sometimes four heads....
Also present in the void of her womb are sperm
that are sleek and athletic in appearance, except that their
function is not to fertilize. These are killer sperm that roam
around in search of other men’s sperm to destroy them....
The Health Benefits of Iodine
A previous section noted how insufficient amounts of specific minerals in the body could cause deficiency diseases. One mineral discovered to have profound effects on health is Iodine. There was a time in orthodox medicine when Iodine was used in gram amounts to resolve a wide array of health challenges. Dr. Albert Szent Gyorgyi, the Nobel Laureate and physician who discovered Vitamin C in 1928, made the following remarks about Iodine:
"When I was a medical student, Iodine in the form of KI [Potassium Iodide] was the universal medicine. Nobody knew what it did, but it did something and did something good. We students use to sum up the situation in this little rhyme:
If ye don’t know what, where, and why Prescribe ye then K and I"
Numerous studies since that time have led to a much greater understanding of the role Iodine plays in maintaining health. While generally acknowledged as essential for proper thyroid gland function, it is now understood to be a vital element for normal function of the entire human body. Discovered in seaweed by French chemist Bernard Courtois in 1811, it is one of what are known as the Halogen elements -- the others being Fluorine, Bromine, Chlorine, and Astatine.
Recent studies indicate that all cells of the body possess Iodine receptors. Researchers identified an Iodine pump -- the sodium/iodide symporter -- which was found in the thyroid gland, mammary glands, stomach mucosa, ovaries, thymus gland (seat of the adaptive immune system), skin, joints, arteries, bones, and choroid plexus in the brain (which makes cerebrospinal fluid). They also found that the other Halogen elements -- Fluorine and Bromine in particular -- compete with Iodine wherever the body requires Iodine. What this means is if the body lacks sufficient amounts of Iodine, Fluorine and Bromine -- both of which are highly toxic to the body -- will take its place if they are readily available....
Studies show that in the 30 years following the removal
of Iodine from the American diet and the addition
of Bromine and Fluorine to it, increased cases
of breast cancer, hypothyroidism, atherosclerosis,
hypertension, prostate cancer, and fibromyalgia followed. The incidence of breast cancer in women 30
years ago was about one in twenty. Today it is
about one in seven. A significant difference in
those 30 years is that women now consume about
half the amount of Iodine today that they consumed
30 years ago. A reduction in salt intake contributed
to these statistics....
