When one considers the possibility of whether God exists or not, one has already accepted the idea that he or she has already at the very least idealized their belief in the nature of the God they are attempting to determine exists or not. In other words, one has imagined what this God would be like and then determines whether that God exists or not. One cannot say God exists, or does not exist, without having some idea of the nature of this God. For example, the God is all-powerful, or the greatest good possible, or greater than anything else imaginable, omniscient, etc.
So how does one determine the nature of this God they are proposing for either existence or non-existence? Experiences and knowledge provide one with the necessary tools that allow them to formulate their idea of God. Once one has formulated their idea of God it is then possible to either believe that this God exists, or believe that this God does not exist. If the latter becomes one's accepted belief then they may formulate another idea of God, or possibly adopt one from someone else, and then once again either believe that God exists, or believe otherwise. Regardless, one cannot believe either way until they have some idea of the nature of God
