A QUEST FOR TRUTH IN AN AGE OF DARKNESS

The Mab’s Cross Trilogy is an epic love story set in the 14th Century. Society was in upheaval. Magna Carta had awakened the promise of human rights, the Roman Church was crumbling from within, famine ravaged the land, the French king hijacked the Holy See to Avignon and annihilated the Knights Templar, a band of starving Scots humiliated the English at Bannockburn, and Edward II died in a Welsh dungeon. In the lawless marchlands of Lancashire, Sir William Bradshaw and his Lady Mab refused to surrender their dreams to the chaos, and their love for each other created a legend that will not die. The ruins of the cross that bears Mab’s name can still be seen on the Standishgate in Wigan, Lancashire. After 700 years, it remains as a humble tribute to a noble dream. The story of that cross reveals a world torn by tyranny and rebellion, faith and betrayal, hot-blooded chivalry and cold-blooded murder; and yet it also celebrates the rebirth of Reason after a thousand years of darkness.

For all the human misfortune in that ghastly scene, I was equally shaken by the fate of the horses. Hundreds upon hundreds of beautiful destriers lay tangled and thrashin’ in the mass, with spears through their breasts or legs chopped off; strugglin’ to rise on limbs that were no longer there, or even worse, on shards of splintered bone. They screamed and screamed in their pain and confusion. No sane horseman would let a single horse suffer so, let alone a thousand. I kept thinkin’ about God. Where was God? Why did he not stop it? We had barely begun, and I just wanted him to stop it!
Gloucester was dead. His men had fought valiantly, but the Scots had held. Hereford had blindly led his force to a similar fate. Through it all, the Men o Haigh had stood their ground, forming a buffer between the enemy and the king. All we had to do up to that point was watch, but after a time, I just could ne see or hear anymore. I would not. I was no longer the fearless warrior I wanted to be. A gray curtain descended across my vision. My ears were ringing. The battle raged before me but dimly, as though portrayed in the faded threads of some old tapestry. I leaned over and hugged Meggy’s neck and cried, ‘Oh Meggy, what have we done…what have we done?’

About Jon Norris

Jon Norris is a genealogist, writer, and amateur historian. His research has unearthed a number of fascinating characters whose histories read better than most fiction. A persistent theme marks their lives; one of tyranny and rebellion. It seems that each generation has been faced with that terrible choice: whether to support the tyranny of their rulers or rise up against it. Mab’s Cross is the first of a series that will celebrate these heroic struggles. Jon Norris studied creative fiction at the New School in NYC and is a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. He lives and works in Maine.
