Another mortar round exploded near by with a burst like a small thunderclap. I felt the floor of the armored carrier shudder under my feet.

I tore off the headset as a second one landed, listened for fifteen or twenty seconds and returned to the radio. I only listened disconnectedly, and I found myself more attuned to the sounds of the incoming enemy fire than the radio. We sat still and silent like mute little statues.

Suddenly, Bronski was tapping me on the shoulder from behind.

" What? " I snapped.

" Listen....listen! "

I jerked the headphones completely off and laid them on the shelf. Bronski stepped into the front of the vehicle and shut off its diesel engine.

About Wm C. Stodgel

 Wm C. Stodgel is a combat veteran of the Viet Nam war prior to and following the Tet offensive. During the war he traveled from the north along the Cambodian border to the south into the Mekong delta. He has been published in Soldier of Fortune with six "I was There" articles.

He lives with his family in northern lower Michigan. Drafted is the first in a series of recent pursuits, with work progressing on another novel.
