Vice president and CIO Peter Stone struggled to understand why after doing everything right so much was going wrong at work and at home. His guardian angel, Ardama, spoke the answer into the ether in tones incompatible with Peter's sense of hearing. Ardama whispered, "Peter, there are crosses for every believer and none will escape the path, lest they defect to the losing side and what awaits them there is far worse than the cross. The cross is formed in every believer's life, and we angels erect those crosses not of wood, but of ordered circumstances. Peter, even the boardroom is put to our uses so that in your life you might experience the path of Him whom you profess."

Peter said, "I know most people think the executive suites of our most powerful corporations are halls of sober thought, calm objective analysis, and solid business decisions. But I tell you that it is largely an accident in most companies when the right things get done. Why? Because humans run corporations and humans are naturally driven by emotion and the hunger to fulfill their personal desires. Objectivity, facts, rational thought, feasibility studies, profit motive and other such animals from the herd of business decisions are sacrificed daily on the altar of ambition in the temple of self-interest. It is better that the masses wallow in their illusions than to really know what thin threads and hard heads our very futures swing upon. Some companies are better than others, but I believe all companies struggle to make truth rule over emotion. The problem is that emotionally based decisions and actions are rarely avoidable and rarely rational. I think it was Hitler who said: I use emotion to control the masses and reserve reason for only a few. So you see, these vendors are opportunists; they search out the emotional buttons to push to take control of the situation and block out reason. They don't care if Canterbury Health, Inc. needs their software or not. They just attempt to sway the emotions of decision makers in order to get their lucrative contracts inked.
