Book Details

This is a fast reading, riveting book that portrays the human side of the January 8, 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others – and the healing that is taking place. Written by a Tucsonan living a few blocks from the site of the shooting who is an ardent fan of “Gabby”, The Tucson Tragedy takes readers right to the scene and into the hearts and minds of the victims and their families, the heroes, the suspected assailant and everyone else impacted by this heart-breaking tragedy. Without politicizing or sensationalizing the event and its far-reaching ramifications, this book renders a soul-searching treatment of the underlying dynamics and lessons to be learned from this ghastly event. “Dr. Newport does an excellent job of portraying the creation of a community of healing out of the ashes of this tragic shooting…This is truly a book written from the heart.” - From the Foreword by Rabbi Stephanie Aaron, Gabrielle Giffords' spiritual advisor.

Book Excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter 10 - Moving Forward On the evening of April 1 I drove out to Oro Valley to witness a dedication ceremony at a baseball field... in honor of Christina-Taylor Green... Christina's father, John Green, gave a very moving talk...You could hear the crackling in his voice as John Green, a very imposing man, delivered his talk. It must have been a very bittersweet experience for both Christina's mother, Roxana, and her father to have participated in this moving dedication ceremony at the very baseball field where their precious daughter had spent so many hours. ...Near the end of his talk he stated: "If she were with us today I know what she would say: "If one 9-year-old girl could accomplish so much - think of what we could all do together."
