Shanile Goggins was that rare kind of teenager. At 19, this smart and savvy Ohio State University student was hardworking, churchgoing and goal-oriented. She volunteered in homeless shelters, and wanted to be a senator, working to improve the lives of the elderly. Then one day while working her after-school job, she felt a pain in her chest. Her life would never be the same.

The Summer that Changed My Life is about Shanile’s painful — but inspiring — journey that followed her diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

In her own words, Shanile describes the complex mix of emotions as she faces uncertain cancer-treatment options — all the while continuing in a job and donating time to charity. From chemotherapy and a couple of painful transplants, Shanile’s world is dominated by hospital visits, but also hope. Hope from a supportive family, and from her devout belief in and understanding of God.
