Peaceful Endings: The NOPOSAM Project, the new highly-anticipated Thriller book from Coventry, RI author Michael K. Tucker.
Nominated for the 2008 Evvy Awards. The EVVY Awards recognizes the highest quality of alternatively and self-published books.
August 20, 2008, Denver, CO and Coventry, RI -- Embedded microchip nanotechnology has quickly become as controversial a topic as stem cell research involving both a volatile and emotional debate amongst global corporate planners and consumer privacy advocates. Techno-thriller Peaceful Endings: The NOPOSAM Project spans two and a half days, where this emerging technology collides with faulty government ethics, gone astray.
Defenders of embedded microchip retail tracking systems cite the benefits of using these tiny transmitters in their efforts to reduce counterfeit merchandising, consumer theft and monitoring consumer preferences. Medical proponents have taken it a step further by advocating for Radio Frequency Identification—the process of imbedding a microchip under the skin of patients so that their personal and medical information can be accessed instantly if a critical health crisis emerges. Even the US Department of Defense incorporated this technology into their Homeland Security efforts in recent years.
But what if this very real and ever-expanding technology fell into the wrong hands and was used for more sinister purposes? Peaceful Endings: The NOPOSAM Project, proposes just that scenario and takes microchips and nanotechnology to a surreal and startling new level. When Coventry General Hospital overflows with patients dying from seemingly minor injuries, trauma specialist, Dr. Marilynn Harwell, determines to find the antidote. Her chance meeting with Doug Talbot, television cameraman for Channel 16, entwines the two in a race against time, as a man with his own agenda, General Thomas Uxbridge, head of the SIA, puts the two under suspicion and threatens their very lives, culminating in two startling and electrifying endings.

"Fast-paced conspiracy novel that was fun to read. It's one of those "conspiracy" plots that becomes more believable with time. In terms of plot and characters, I liked the story. I look forward to reading Michael's next novel."

This is a techno-thriller that has all the elements that have been "done before" such as covert government operation by rogue group, mysterious illness killing population, and bumbling bad guys. Yet the book is so well written that the reader forgets all that and actually gets sucked in and has difficulty putting the book down. The action is virtually non-stop with high tension. Doug and Marilynn are two very likable characters and the reader starts really rooting for them to upset the bad guys and win the day.

"I must confess to having a predisposition to dislike stories based on government conspiracies. I enjoyed this story."

"I love a good medical thriller. Peaceful Endings did not dissapoint. This is a must read. The action never stops. I couldn't put the book down. Medical thriller, conspiracy novel, action-packed, frightening, and romance are all words that describe this book. Michael's next book is coming out in early 2010. I'm not sure I can wait that long. Do not miss out on this.

Adventures in Never-Never Land
This was excellent writing. There are those books where the ending is predictable then there are those who leave you guessing to the end. This book was the latter. It provided twists and turns so the reader would never get bored.
The characters were well developed. There was one that I thought was overly mean but it helps the plot line. You cant help but like the two main characters and root for them.

EXCERPT
Dr. Paul Crawford, Chief Medical Examiner at Providence Medical Morgue, pulled his buried head from his hands, startled by a ringing telephone. He glanced at the Jack Daniels bottle on the table in front of him and cursed. It was empty. The phone had rung countless times by the time he shuffled his short rotund body across the room. He never rushed to answer anymore. It was always death and grief for some poor unsuspecting family. Snatching the phone he answered, "Medical Examiner's office, Crawford!" "Paul," said a soft voice on the other end. "Hey, Marilynn," he answered shakily. He needed a drink bad. "Are you okay?" she asked with concern. "Not really. I've gotten sixty-eight bodies in the last twenty hours. The walk-in refrigerator is bursting at the seams and all six tables in the autopsy suite are filled. I had to call in extra help." "I guess you've got your hands full." "Yeah," he answered despontently, burying his head between his hands again. "Just another day at the office. Now, what can I do for you?" "I wanted to know if you noticed anything unusual about all these victims?" "Yeah! They're all dead!" "I'm serious, Paul. Is there anything about them that...." "Not that I've noticed," he interrupted. "As a matter of fact, I just finished working on someone named Jack Daniels." "You're drunk, aren't you?" "Look, Marilynn. I only drink to excess." "Paul, I need you to do me a big favor and you need to be sober." "Okay! Okay!" he said, lifting his head out. "I'll put on a fresh pot of coffee as soon as I hang up. So what's the big favor?" "You know I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important." "Even drunk I know that." "I need you to match all the causes of death." "And just what am I looking for?" "I'm not sure. Look for a pattern of anything odd or strange." "Got it! Make note of anything strange or odd." "This is important, Paul. Can I depend on you?" "How long have we known each other, Marilynn? Have I ever let you down before?" "Thanks. I knew I could count on you." "Give me some time before you call me back. I'll see what I can dig up. Bad pun." "And Paul." "Yeah?" "Don't forget." "Forget what?" "That pot of coffee." There was a soft click, then dial tone.
History Man:
The next exciting Michael K. Tucker thriller.

Excerpt:
Marilynn, Lavigne, Brown and the two soldiers went back to interrogation room three.
“What’s with the two heavies?” said Marilynn pointing at the two armed men. Am I a threat to you too?”
“Don’t take it personally, Doc. Standard procedure in matters of national security; it’s for all of our protection.”
Marilynn folded her arms and slumped back in the comfortable leather chair. “Riggghhhhttttttt.”
Clearly agitated Lavigne spoke first. “I don’t know what the hell you were trying to prove with that stunt. I’m willing to let it slide though, if you came up with something.”
“Look, I needed to earn his trust. And I wasn’t going to get it with him feeling as if he were a prisoner and knowing full well that you were in here watching and scrutinizing everything he said. You brought me here because you thought I was the best. So let me do what I do best.”
Lavigne pulled a chair up next to hers and spoke softly. “You are the specialist here and we need to trust you and your instincts. So, did you find out anything?”
“The same as you I’m afraid. He really has no idea who he is or where he’s from.”
Brown however, got down into her face. “You expect us to believe that?”
Marilynn pushed her head back. “You need a breath mint!”
Brown was infuriated. “Don’t screw with us or….”
Marilynn jumped to her feet, “Or what? Are you forgetting I’m a guest here? I’m not one of the bad guys you can intimidate and I’m certainly not one of your henchmen you can boss around. I’m a taxpaying citizen who by the way helps pay your salaries and I want to go home, now!”
Lavigne rubbed his forehead and temples. “I’m sorry Doctor. You are correct of course. We’re all a little tired and stressed right now. Please have patience with us. We mean no harm. Our thoughts and concerns are always for the safety of the country. We realize that you would not withhold information. Your reputation is impeccable. Will you accept our apology?”
Marilynn paced the room until her clenched hands unfolded and her facial muscles relaxed then sat back down with her legs crossed. When she’d sufficiently sorted her thoughts she pointed at Lavigne then Brown. “This is your last chance. Don’t blow it!”
Lavigne looked to the heavens and mouthed Thank you. “So, Doctor. What do you think? Can you help him get his mind back?”
“It’s not that simple. There isn’t a switch on the side of his head that can be flipped to normal setting. It could take months of therapy. Plus, I don’t know enough about this case. I need to speak with him some more to fully understand the scope of it.”
“Can you at least put a time frame?”
“Didn’t you hear what I just said? Look, these cases can take as little as days or as long as the remainder of a patient’s lifetime. And you never know how or when it’ll happen or what could trigger a return. Heck, the simplest event like seeing a familiar picture could jog a memory.”
Brown sounded miserable. “So, where do we go from here?”
