Benny Wade was born approximately a month after Hitler invaded Poland.
He and his brother Toodly with their Father, Julius and Mother, Eleanor lived what seemed to Benny to be an idyllic life in rural South Georgia on a part of a rustic farm which was his grandfather’s homeplace. After World War II Julius became an ultrasuccessful automobile salesman and for the second half of the decade of the 1940s the family enjoyed a time of wine and roses accentuated by post war prosperity. Soon the roses wilted and the wine was transformed into nightly excesses of any available drinkable alcohol. The book explores family experiences and outcomes impacted by Julius’s alcoholism.
Eleanor, Toodly, and Benny coped with Julius’s downfall in their own ways but eventually each survived and thrived overcoming the hurt wrought by the extent to which Julius imbibed. Parts of the book are sad perhaps even tragic but humor pops up often in unexpected places.
Many of the episodes are based on Benny’s memory while some may have been influenced by his imagination. Most of all the book portrays a message of hope by overcoming adversity through the realization that each person ultimately makes his/her own decision whether to abandon or to utilize the car of life.

Benny Wade holds M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ed.D. degrees from the University of Georgia where he earned certification as a reading specialist, plus educational leadership, and gifted education certification. He enjoyed a splendid career in public education working with students from preschool through graduate school. He advocates and practices The Seven R’s of Responsible People described within. He would like to tell you he retired with 24 years as a big league baseball player where he hit 800 home runs and posted a .375 lifetime batting average.
However if you looked in the major leagues records you wouldn’t even find his name so he won’t tell you that. Besides some people have already had the audacity to question the veracity of some of his contentions. Merle, his partner of 53 years is his trophy wife, while he is her booby prize husband. Benny has ridden a black billy goat, a brown donkey, and a red one-speed bicycle, but not all at the same time. He has attended four county fairs but has never won a ribbon of any color. He has been whipped with both a dried cotton stalk and a green peach tree limb. Anything else he would like to tell you about himself, you wouldn’t care about knowing. Anything else about him which you would like to know, he hopes you don’t find out. So let’s not waste any more time reading this. Let’s all get busy reading, Julius, Please Get Back In the Car!.
