“My mother died,” Bobbie said to the stranger without looking up at him.
The man turned, “I’m sorry?”
“Don’t be,” Bobbie said.
“No, I…” the man started but the look Christina gave him told him it was okay. He was about to resume his polite walk away.
“She died borning me. She died borning me and I came out stupid.”
“Bobbie!” Christina said, lower, “You know that’s not true.” Bobbie looked embarrassed.
The man walked away as politely as he could.
“Bobbie, what made you say that?” she asked.
“You’re not going to get sick. You’re going to be okay.”
“We’ll talk about this later Bobbie,” she said.
“You’re going to be just fine,” he said.
