Fatty! Retard! F--!
Bald-head! Slit-eyes! Cripple!
What if either you or your loved one were the target of these and other insults in school? What happens when words lead to violence or even death?
In schools, on school vehicles, on the Internet and through other electronic devices, bullying can inflict lifelong emotional and psychological damage. Even worse, it can escalate to homicide or suicide.
COLOR BIND is based on a true bullying incident. COLOR BIND offers to parents, teachers, administrators and others practical solutions to bullying and other interpersonal issues to better serve and protect our greatest resources—our children.
"History reflects that my parents, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, were living demonstrations that we should never judge people by the color of their skin, but rather, by the content of their character. I applaud Dr. Herschelle Adams for providing a resource that reiterates this truth and the importance of strengthening the bonds between schools, communities and families to foster principles taught and lived by my parents," Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Mrs. Coretta Scott King and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SAMPLE TEXT:
Only on TV had I ever seen anyone with skin that dark.
Black. Blacker than the marker Antonio was using to write on the board. Black as the ace of spades.
“Excuse me, Dr. Jackson. This is Ali Mohammed, your new student from Sudan--our only Arabic speaking student--he speaks a little English,” Mr. Scott, the assistant principal, escorted the boy into my sixth grade English Language Learners (ELLs) class.
Judging by some gestures and expressions of disbelief, a black, literally black, person was not a common sight for them, either.
Teaching, like playing Spades, my favorite card game, required intuition, and the reactions of a few students to Ali’s arrival worried me—kind of like being dealt a poor Spades hand--all low-numbered and no spades.
I sensed something was wrong with this hand, and I wondered how my students would play it.
