About the Author: Jerome W. Freeman, MD is a practicing neurologist and educator. He is professor and chair of the Department of Neurosciences at Sanford School of Medicine, where he has taught bioethics to medical students and undergraduates for many years. He is the founding director of the DeGroot Center at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, which is dedicated to education in bioethics, humanities, and the healing arts, and is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary year. His previous publications include three volumes of poetry and two collections of essays dealing with issues of illness care: The Colors of Care: What Are Those Doctors Thinking? (2005) and Come and See (1995). He also co-authored an anthology focused on issues of caring, The Call to Care, in 1999. Dr. Freeman and his wife, Mary, live on the rolling prairie of eastern South Dakota.
