Colonial Guyana was a time of enormous challenge for women, especially in the way society measured their value. The more vulnerable were the poor, the widowed or divorced, and those with children outside of marriage. Many were forced to labor as maids to those with the means to afford them. Others forced to work in fields or other menial jobs that gave them a way to care for their family. Sumintra defied conventional expectations and pushed against those boundaries that held women hostage to the cultural norms of the time. Her life of devotion, dedication, and determination, to provide her children with the opportunity to a better life came at incredible sacrifice. She exemplified the spirit of Guyanese women of that era.
