Deep in a rugged section of Alaska, something is making people ill. It’s cancer—and it’s striking dozens of laborers and soldiers who worked there on a nuclear cleanup site. But when anti-nuclear activist Carrie Graham turns up evidence of the improper disposal of radioactive waste, it reveals something even more sinister. And the U.S. government will stop at nothing to prevent the information’s release, even if it means putting an end to Graham’s activities—permanently.

A multi-voiced science thriller with far-reaching implications, Betrayal follows the repercussions stemming from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons tests during the early days of the Cold War and beyond. From spirited protests at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Northern California, to treacherous intrigue waged inside the ivory towers of academia, Betrayal takes you inside the struggle to expose a massive nuclear cover-up where even those on the same side don’t dare trust each other.

Truly an interactive novel, Betrayal is fully integrated with the Web site: www.betrayal-interactivenovel.com. The site is packed with supplemental information and primary sources to increase understanding, while empowering readers to share their thoughts on nuclear issues through an online community forum.

"You must promise never to reveal the source of what I am about to tell you.

"What is it?" I asked the librarian who had sought me out at a university conference on Global Warming in the Arctic.

"I recently received a manuscript that will be of considerable interest to you. The author is Carrie Graham, a woman I believe you once knew."

Stunned by what she said, I leaned forward and looked deep into her eyes. "Carrie. She died in a terrible hit-and-run automobile accident. I remember it well. What is the manuscript?"

"It's Part I of her novel about nuclear contamination in Alaska."

"I knew Carrie was writing a novel. But why do you want to keep your connection to it a secret?"

"You will understand when you read it."

The woman then reached into her pocketbook and handed me a large envelope. "Here is the manuscript along and a computer disk with additional chapters. Do keep in touch. I'd like to be informed even though our library prefers not to be directly involved."

I thanked the woman and said goodbye. That evening after dinner with Arctic colleagues, I returned to my hotel room, opened the envelope, and began to read. Several events in the chapter were familiar to me. But the last paragraph was a complete surprise. In it, she refers to the discovery of a top-secret Pentagon plan unknown even to key members of the federal government. Reading it again, my earlier feeling of sadness about Carrie was replaced by a penetrating fear I had not experienced in a very long time.
