Not Just Another California Girl!

When Terry was about to graduate from Mount Shasta High School, her advisor told her that she had been “a big fish in a small town” and that UCLA, her preferred college, would chew her up and spit her out. But Terry had a dream, and believed in herself. A few months into her freshman year, a photographer from LOOK magazine encouraged her to enter the Miss California pageant…and in that life-changing moment, Terry’s adventures began. This entertaining, candid memoir chronicles Terry’s multifaceted life and career experiences, from reigning as Miss California and Miss USA to working as an actor in the television and motion picture industries. Terry shares charming, hilarious, and scandalous stories about the entertainment industry, the world of beauty pageants...and finally, the world of politics, as she shares the story of how she met the love of her life, at a party for John F. Kennedy, following his nomination at the Democratic National Convention. Maryland delegate Joseph Tydings was at that party…and a real-life love story was born. Terry’s inspiring story will convince you that there’s no more powerful force than an American girl with a big dream.

About the Author

Terry Huntingdon Tydings

Terry Huntingdon Tydings’ memoirs are informed by her varied, multilayered careers: After reigning as Miss California, and Miss United States of America, she worked as an actor in the motion picture and television industries. Modeling assignments took her to New York and Europe. She was a free-lance photographer with the United States government, and a staff member on Capitol Hill for California’s Senior Senator, Alan Cranston. Following her marriage to United States Senator Joseph Tydings, she became immersed in the world of politics, co-chaired and chaired fund-raising events in our nation’s Capitol, and served as scheduler for Senator Gary Hart’s 1984 Presidential campaign. In 2011 she enrolled in The Writer’s Studio at Stanford University, and was quickly immersed in her life-long passion of writing. She is currently adding finishing touches to her second memoir, Fire In The Head, which she occasionally puts aside to focus on a work of fiction. A fifth-generation Californian, Ms. Tydings lives in a century-old cottage overlooking the sea.
